Botanical Benefits Wild Yam has been used by Native Americans for hundreds of years to treat the symptoms related to menstrual discomfort. Symptoms of PMS, like cramping, nausea, bloating, back pain, breast tenderness and mood swings, are an indication of hormonal imbalance, particularly estrogen dominance or progesterone weakness. The active compound found in Wild Yam is a phytoestrogen (plant based estrogen) called Diosgenin. Diosgenin is well-recognized in the medical community, as it was originally used in the lab to formulate birth control pills in the 1960s. Even though diosgenin is not directly converted to progesterone in the body, it is theorized that it locks on to estrogen cell receptors preventing the body’s estrogen from producing the undesirable effects of premenstrual and post-menopausal symptoms. In addition, preliminary animal studies have shown that wild yam has the potential to also reduce blood fat, known as triglycerides.
